BMAT

United Kingdom

The BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) was used by several universities (e.g. Imperial, UCL, Cambridge) for medicine and biomedical sciences admissions. While it has been retired for many UK universities from 2024 onward, its format remains a useful reference for biomedical reasoning practice.

About BMAT

Test structure (legacy)

  • Section 1 — Aptitude & Skills: critical thinking and problem-solving (32 questions, 60 min)
  • Section 2 — Scientific Knowledge & Applications: biology, chemistry, physics, maths (27 questions, 30 min)
  • Section 3 — Writing Task: short essay on a given prompt (30 min)

Why BMAT prep can still be useful

  • BMAT-style Section 2 questions are excellent training for the scientific subsections of UCAT, IMAT, and similar tests.
  • Section 1 sharpens critical thinking — a transferable skill across all admission tests.
  • Writing under time pressure is rare practice that's still relevant for interviews and applications.
