UCAT Admission Test 2026: Exam, Scores, Dates and Practice

The UCAT can feel complicated at first: who needs to take it, when do you register, what is actually in the exam, how are scores calculated, and which practice tests should you use?

Here we cover the key information for the 2026 UCAT, including dates, format, scoring, official question banks, preparation, results and the important differences between the UK UCAT and UCAT ANZ.

What is the UCAT?

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is a computer-based admissions test used by universities for entry to medicine, dentistry and related courses.

Around 37,000 candidates take it each year.

Universities do not normally use the UCAT alone. The score can be considered alongside:

• Academic results
• Other admission requirements
• The individual university's selection criteria
• The Situational Judgement result

Students should always check the requirements of every course they plan to apply to.

Who needs to take the UCAT in 2026?

The 2026 UCAT is relevant to students applying to participating universities for:

• 2027 entry
• Deferred entry in 2028, where accepted by the university

The test can normally be taken once per test cycle.

Taking the UCAT more than once in the same year is considered misconduct.

For the UK UCAT cycle:

What is in the UCAT exam?

The current UCAT has 4 sections.

Abstract Reasoning was removed in 2025, so preparation material that still treats it as part of the current exam is outdated.

Including instruction sections, the standard test lasts approximately 117 minutes 30 seconds.

Once the exam starts, it cannot normally be paused unless the student has an approved arrangement that allows rest breaks.

Verbal Reasoning

Tests the ability to read information and critically evaluate written passages.

Decision Making

Tests how well a student can make decisions using complex information, logic and reasoning.

Quantitative Reasoning

Tests the ability to interpret and evaluate numerical information.

Situational Judgement

Tests understanding of professional behaviour and appropriate responses to real-world situations.

How UCAT scoring works

The 3 cognitive sections are each scored from 300 to 900:

• Verbal Reasoning: 300 to 900
• Decision Making: 300 to 900
• Quantitative Reasoning: 300 to 900

This creates a total cognitive score between 900 and 2700.

Situational Judgement is reported separately:

• Band 1 is the strongest performance
• Band 4 is the weakest performance

There is no negative marking, so a wrong answer does not remove marks from the score.

Some Decision Making questions involving multiple statements can also award partial credit.

Is there an official UCAT score calculator?

There is no official raw-score-to-scaled-score calculator for UCAT practice tests.

The real exam converts raw performance into scaled scores, with different test forms statistically equated so results can be compared fairly.

Official practice tests, however:

• Do not provide an official scaled score
• Do not save a final result
• Cannot be converted exactly using a simple universal formula

For this reason, third-party UCAT score calculators and score converters should only be treated as estimates.

A predicted conversion should never be treated as an exact indication of the score a student will receive in the real test.

What is a good UCAT score?

There is no single score that guarantees admission.

Universities can use the UCAT differently. They may:

• Set a minimum score
• Rank candidates by total cognitive score
• Consider individual subtest scores
• Combine UCAT performance with academic results
• Include Situational Judgement in selection

The meaning of a score therefore depends on the universities and courses being targeted.

Final 2026 UK score statistics are not available until the testing cycle progresses.

The latest completed UK cycle, 2025, had:

• Mean total cognitive score: 1891
• Mean Verbal Reasoning score: 602
• Mean Decision Making score: 628
• Mean Quantitative Reasoning score: 661

These figures are useful for context only. They should not be treated as 2026 university cutoffs.

The UCAT Consortium does not require or officially endorse paid preparation courses.

Its official resources are free.

Whatever preparation method a student chooses, the important point is to make sure the material reflects the current UCAT format.

In particular, resources that still include Abstract Reasoning as a current section should not be treated as up to date.

How UCAT registration and login work

All candidates need a 2026 UCAT Account, including students who have taken the test in a previous year.

The basic process is:

2. Complete registration
3. Apply for access arrangements if required
4. Book a test appointment
5. Check the booking details before test day

Students should access their account through the official UCAT website rather than through unofficial login pages.

If approved access arrangements are needed, they should be arranged before booking the test appointment.

What happens on UCAT test day?

Students taking the test at a centre should:

• Arrive around 15 minutes early
• Bring an accepted form of photo identification
• Complete the required check-in and security procedures
• Follow the test centre rules
• Be ready for each section to begin immediately after its instructions

Standard candidates cannot pause the test for ordinary breaks.

Students with approved arrangements may have different conditions, including additional time or rest breaks where applicable.

When do UCAT results arrive?

Candidates testing at a centre receive their result after completing the exam.

The result normally appears in the UCAT Account within approximately 24 hours.

For the UK admissions process, UCAT sends results directly to the universities selected by the applicant, so students do not normally need to enter the score manually in their UCAS application.

The 2026 UCAT result is valid for the 2027 admissions cycle, including eligible applications for deferred entry in 2028.

What is UCAT ANZ?

UCAT ANZ is used by participating universities in Australia and New Zealand for medicine, dentistry and clinical science admissions.

The test content is the same as the UK UCAT, including:

• Verbal Reasoning
• Decision Making
• Quantitative Reasoning
• Situational Judgement

However, UCAT ANZ has its own registration process, dates, fees and results system.

UCAT ANZ 2026 dates

For 2026:

• Booking opened: 3 March
• Standard booking deadline: 15 May
• Late booking deadlines: 29 May and 5 June
• Testing period: 1 July to 5 August

The 2026 UCAT ANZ testing window has therefore finished.

UCAT ANZ fees

For 2026:

• Australia or New Zealand: AUD 335
• Australian concession fee: AUD 240
• Overseas testing: AUD 405

Late booking can involve additional fees.

UCAT vs UCAT ANZ scoring

The cognitive scoring system is the same:

• 300 to 900 for each cognitive section
• 900 to 2700 total cognitive score

The main difference is Situational Judgement.

For the UK UCAT, Situational Judgement is reported as:

• Band 1
• Band 2
• Band 3
• Band 4

For UCAT ANZ, Situational Judgement is instead reported as a 300 to 900 scaled score.

Students should therefore not compare UK and ANZ Situational Judgement results as if they used the same scale.

Can you take UCAT and UCAT ANZ in the same year?

No.

A candidate cannot take both UCAT and UCAT ANZ in the same year.

Students applying to participating universities in both Australia or New Zealand and the UK should take UCAT ANZ and follow the official process for having that result supplied to participating UK universities.
